Here are some key signs that one-on-one mentorship with me will be helpful…and some of my own experiences with these.

Fearful?

Are you afraid of a cancer recurrence or of a new primary? I was too – very afraid, in fact that was all I could focus on. I would tell everyone how I was now high risk for a couple of cancers because of my treatment. It was a big focus of many conversations and it wasn’t helping me reduce my risk. Getting past your fear will be a natural outcome of taking back control that cancer has taken from you.

Hypervigilant?

Do you suspect cancer whenever something doesn’t feel right in your body? I did. In fact, shortly after my cancer treatment finished, I had a headache. I was so worried that my cancer had come back, I paged the oncology resident and then tearfully explained that I have brain mets (I didn’t). Gaining back trust in your body is a key to a new thriving life.

Stressed and Anxious?

Do you feel edgy and have a hard time relaxing or enjoying life? I had so much stress and anxiety before I had to return for one of my 3-month check-ups that I worried myself into my first migraine headache. Not everyone gets migraines mind you. Where do you feel stress and anxiety in your body? High blood pressure? Muscle tension? Bloating? Diarrhea? Constipation? Heartburn? Something else? The one-on-one sessions will be scheduled during mutually convenient times and will include a detailed history and assessment and detailed recommendations. There will be plenty of time for you to ask your burning questions around nutrition and lifestyle changes to reduce your cancer risk.
